{"id":1073,"date":"2012-03-29T19:36:51","date_gmt":"2012-03-29T19:36:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/graffiti.ntci.on.ca\/2011-12\/?page_id=1073"},"modified":"2012-03-29T19:36:51","modified_gmt":"2012-03-29T19:36:51","slug":"the-secret-society-of-teachers-and-my-toblerone-bar","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/graffiti.ntci.on.ca\/2011-12\/spring-2012-issue\/opinion-and-humour\/the-secret-society-of-teachers-and-my-toblerone-bar\/","title":{"rendered":"The Secret Society of Teachers and My Toblerone Bar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lauren D\u2019Angelo<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I swear, teachers have a secret society that focuses on different ways to manipulate students into doing various things.\u00a0 Be it completing homework, answering questions in class or supporting their class for charity week, these teachers have come up with various tactics that will make you feel horrible for not obeying them.\u00a0 I have a<br \/>\nvery lovely French teacher, Ms. Chisholm, whom I believe to be the president of<br \/>\nthis group.\u00a0 She has absolutely mastered the art of guilting me into doing things that I don\u2019t really want to do.\u00a0 I don\u2019t do very much French homework, but<br \/>\nit\u2019s more than I\u2019ve ever done before, I get assignments in on time, and I stay<br \/>\nquiet in class, simply because I don\u2019t want to stress out such a kind<br \/>\nteacher.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Chisholm\u2019s ability to teacher-pressure me into doing homework and other such things took an unusual turn during Charity Week.\u00a0 I came into the classroom, tired from writing a science test first thing in the morning, and there was a 4.5 kg Toblerone bar waiting for me on my desk.\u00a0 Ms. Chisholm informed us that it was her home<br \/>\nform\u2019s Charity Week event: a raffle for a giant Toblerone, $2 a ticket.\u00a0 After class had finished and we were waiting around the door for the bell to ring, Ms. Chisholm came up to a group of us and asked if we would buy a ticket.\u00a0 \u201cBuy 3 tickets for $5 with a group of friends and split the chocolate,\u201d she advertized, looking very hopeful.\u00a0 I apologetically (and guiltily) declined, telling her truthfully that I didn\u2019t have my wallet on<br \/>\nme.\u00a0 The bell rang and we all exited the classroom, our minds on other things.<\/p>\n<p>A friend of mine, Charlotte Corelli, also in my French class, suggested that we split the cost of 3 tickets with her \u2013 that way, if we won, we could each have half of the bar.\u00a0 I told her that I really couldn\u2019t: my sister is anaphylactic to nuts, and the Toblerone was simply stuffed with them.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019d have to keep it in my locker,\u201d I joked.\u00a0 She said okay, but the topic came up again, and this time I relented, not unhappily.\u00a0 We filled out our tickets and assumed that that would be the end of it \u2013 after all, there were plenty of tickets in the jar, and I never win anything from raffles.\u00a0But, lo and behold, we won.<\/p>\n<p>Now I have Toblerone coming out of my ears.\u00a0 I don\u2019t even know what to do<br \/>\nwith it.\u00a0\u00a0Charlotte keeps it at her house and cuts me off a gargantuan piece when I ask for one.\u00a0 I bring a knife to school (scary thoughts!) and break it up into egg sized chunks which I give away to friends, and keep in my locker in a sealed plastic bag.\u00a0 I<br \/>\ntake great care not to bring any home, though I did bring some home for the<br \/>\nlong weekend, for which my sister wasn\u2019t home.\u00a0 As I sit here, I think about that secret society of which Ms. Chisholm is president, and I would just like to thank them.\u00a0 Even though I am sure that this Toblerone will do no wonders for my health, it certainly is delicious.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lauren D\u2019Angelo &nbsp;
