{"id":1265,"date":"2012-05-23T20:26:04","date_gmt":"2012-05-23T20:26:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/graffiti.ntci.on.ca\/2011-12\/?page_id=1265"},"modified":"2012-05-23T20:26:04","modified_gmt":"2012-05-23T20:26:04","slug":"the-journey-to-mount-olympus","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/graffiti.ntci.on.ca\/2011-12\/summer-2012-issue\/arts-and-culture\/the-journey-to-mount-olympus\/","title":{"rendered":"The Journey to Mount Olympus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Georgia Mahoney-Webster<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To some, Zeus is a god, and to other Zeus is an incredible<br \/>\nCanadian rock band that recently had their new album, <em>Busting Visions<\/em>, featured on <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> magazine&#8217;s website and toured with Metric, Broken Social Scene, and<br \/>\nmany other amazing bands. <em>Rolling Stone <\/em>magazine says: \u201cToronto&#8217;s<br \/>\nZeus play a rootsy, melodic brand of rock.\u201d But to me, they&#8217;re four guys I&#8217;ve<br \/>\nhad the privilege of knowing practically my whole life! I got the chance to<br \/>\ntalk to Carlin Nicholson, one quarter of Zeus, about music, school, and Zeus&#8217;<br \/>\ngoals for 2012.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Georgia-<\/strong>\u00a0When did you decide you wanted to pursue music as a full<br \/>\ntime job?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carlin-<\/strong>\u00a0It&#8217;s always something that I hoped I would do\/knew I<br \/>\nalways would. It took some time to get to the stage of being able to do music<br \/>\nalone and it required a lot of blind faith\u00a0over the years. I thought I<br \/>\nwould quit sometimes but deep down knew that there was nothing else I&#8217;d be<br \/>\nhappy doing and that I needed to give it longer to flower into a career.<\/p>\n<p><strong>G-<\/strong>\u00a0What are your musical influences?<\/p>\n<p><strong>C-\u00a0<\/strong>So many: Michael Jackson, the Kinks, the Zombies, Dr. Dog, Neil Young, Radio Head, Flaming Lips, Wings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>G-\u00a0<\/strong>When and how did you guys meet?<\/p>\n<p><strong>C-<\/strong>\u00a0Mike and I met in high school; I met Neil through a<br \/>\nfriend\u2019s band, The Golden Dogs. We were all friends before the band formed. We<br \/>\nhad other bands and different things going on, but Zeus is a moment in time<br \/>\nwhere this combination of guys in a much larger circle got together and stayed<br \/>\ntogether.<\/p>\n<p><strong>G-<\/strong>\u00a0What is a hobby of yours other than playing<br \/>\nmusic\/singing?<\/p>\n<p><strong>C-<\/strong>\u00a0I love to cook and download iPhone apps. Kidding! I spend<br \/>\na lot of time recording music, as well\u2014for myself and others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>G-<\/strong>\u00a0What is one of your band&#8217;s goals for 2012?<\/p>\n<p><strong>C-<\/strong>\u00a0Hoping for a European record deal. Also, going to start<br \/>\ntracking a new record. This one isn&#8217;t even out yet, but I really want to have a<br \/>\nlong, casual time recording the follow up to <em>Busting Visions<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>G-<\/strong>\u00a0What was your craziest experience as a band?<\/p>\n<p><strong>C-<\/strong>\u00a0Every new trip we go on is somewhat crazy, in that this<br \/>\nis a crazy job to have chosen. But we keep each other laughing\u2014that\u2019s the key.<\/p>\n<p><strong>G-<\/strong>\u00a0How old were you when you first started playing<br \/>\ninstruments?<\/p>\n<p><strong>C-<\/strong>\u00a0I started on drums at the age of 12.<\/p>\n<p><strong>G-<\/strong>\u00a0What advice do you give to kids who want to be musicians?<\/p>\n<p><strong>C-<\/strong>\u00a0Know that music is a muscle. The more you work it, the<br \/>\neasier it comes.
